It was night, and yet she couldn't sleep. She had watched from the apprentices' den as the moon rose high in the Silverpelt. It was raining, which was unusual for this time of year, little droplets hitting the ground with little plips. The wind was cold, a chilling foreshadowing as what was left to come. She was young, sure, but she knew that leaf-bare could be deadly, and it didn't help that prey was getting harder to find.
That's why she had given up on sleep and had gone out hunting instead. During the daytime, her lighter coat made it harder to go hunting. Unlike most ShadowClan cats, she had a light coloured pelt. She didn't mind being different, but it irritated her that she looked so out of place sometimes. Hunting during the night was much easier. Summerpaw was little enough that she could squeeze into areas others couldn't and, despite the rain and the coldness, managed to catch two mice. Summerpaw was thrilled - mostly, the Clan survived on lizards and snakes. Not that she was complaining, since they were pretty good as it was, but mice were a rare thing to find in their territory, The other Clans had the luck to get all the interesting prey, ShadowClan got snakes and lizards.
So Summerpaw was feeling rather proud of herself as she brought the mice back to the Clan, slipping into the camp silently as the moon rose directly overhead. She knew that she probably shouldn't have been out this late, but she didn't see the point in sitting in the apprentice's den all night, doing nothing. The small she-cat shook her damp fur irritably, padding over the the dwindling fresh-kill pile. She looked at it critically, tail twitching slightly, muttering aloud, "I wonder if I should go out again..."

Nightfall had just left the warrior's den when she caught sight of a very familiar golden pelt. Curious, she padded up behind her newly appointed apprentice. Summerpaw's back was turned, surveying the fresh-kill pile. The apprentice didn't even hear her. That skill needed improvement, for sure. "I wonder if I should go out again..." Nightfall flicked her tail, amused. And I wonder what this particular apprentice is doing up? She faced Summerpaw, nearly breaking into a smirk. Summerpaw? Care to explain? Nightfall challenged the apprentice with her eyes. It was time for this new apprentice's first, good lecture. Nightfall certainly remembered her first. She stifled her laughter.

It wasn't against the warrior code, as far as she could tell, to go out alone. Sure, she probably should've taken someone else with her. Tense times called for desperate measures. Plus, Summerpaw didn't see anything wrong with going out hunting. It wasn't like she was sneaking out to have a tryst with some cat from another Clan. She was only try to help! Wasn't that one of the most important duties a cat had to their Clan? Summerpaw may not be purely a Clan cat, only found one, but the way she had been raised had been burned into her memory. The Clan had to be fed right? Logic dictated that since she couldn't sleep or anything, she might as well help out the Clan. Even if it did sort of break some unspoken rule that she was probably going to get punished for later. But she'd deal with that later...
..or not.
The golden she-cat had been so busy thinking about what she had to do that she didn't even hear her mentor come up behind her. She nearly jumped out of her fur when Nightfall spoke, and flattened her ears in response. Uh-oh. Nightfall was the deputy of the Clan, and also her mentor. Summerpaw wanted to make her proud of her, as she had been thrilled to be named her apprentice, but it didn't look like she was doing a very good job of it... "Uhm, hi, Nightfall." the she-cat meowed, tail twitching. She very much did care to explain, but it had been a rhetorical question. So, defeatedly, Summerpaw meowed, "I was hunting, you see," and the cat nudged the two mice at her paws as proof, "since I couldn't sleep. I didn't do anything wrong, did I?"

The apprentice looked startled, finally noticing Nightfall. As Summerpaw fumbled for an excuse, Nightfall surveyed the two mice at her feet. It was a nice catch, and Nightfall felt a shimmer of pride in her apprentice. Still. The apprentice needed to know why cats didn't go hunting at night. You would think, Summerpaw. The goldenn apprentice seemed at a loss for words. She pitied her, almost. She didn't seem to understand. She sighed. Picture this, Summerpaw. There's a fox in the forest. She flicked her tail before continuing. Dramatic effect. Let's say that Ternflight and Tigerstar are both leading patrols, and can't be reached in time. Let's say the fox comes to camp. She paused. We would have minimal warriors to spare. And due to frequent nightly activities, a certain golden cat is sleeping through the battle. Nightfall looked at Summerpaw. She still wasn't understanding. She sighed. Even if we can get this apprentice no her feet, she'd be in no particular mood to fight. We'd need all the warriors we could get. Even an apprentice could help protect the camp. Nightfall flicked her tail, looking amused. She looked into the trees. She still hasn't learned her lesson. I know how to fix that. Nightfall turned on her heel, heading towards the warrior's den. She looked over her shoulder. Oh, Summerpaw? You're going on the dawn patrol. Be fresh.

Summerpaw knew what Nightfall was saying, she really did. It made sense. A weak cat was a liability to the Clan. Which, in turn, could cause all sorts of problems. It was nearing leaf-bare, and they needed all the paws they could get. Leaf-fall was brutal as it was, though she had heard that it wasn't as bad as last year, but still. So Summerpaw really did understand what Nightfall was saying. After all, Summerpaw was far from stupid. Just a bit... young.
"But, Nightfall," Summerpaw struggled to put her thoughts into words, without back talking or being rude. She respected Nightfall as both her mentor and her deputy, and didn't want to disappoint her. She looked at her paws. "It's just, I couldn't sleep anyway. So instead of lying uselessly in the den, I wanted to be useful. Was that wrong?" Summerpaw didn't understand that - she was just trying to help. When Nightfall turned and walked away, Summerpaw's shoulders drooped. Great. She really had disappointed her mentor. The parting words definitely didn't help, either....
The next morning found the little golden she-cat in the centre of the camp, tail curled neatly around her paws, golden eyes slightly tired but expectantly looking at the warrior's den. She was tired, getting very little sleep, but she sure wasn't about to disappoint Nightfall anymore than she already had. Not this she-cat, anyway.

A tired-looking Summerpaw sat in the middle of camp. Her eyes looked like they were about to close and Nightfall smirked. Well, this should be interesting. She walked over to Summerpaw, greeting her with a nod. "Ready, are you?" Nightfall looked around. "It'll be just me and you today, alright?" She flicked her tail and led the way into the forest.
